Disaster Recovery: What to do when the SA account password is lost in SQL Server 2005

You may have faced the issue of losing the SQL Server SA password. Perhaps you followed the security best-practice of removing the  builtin\Administrators from the sysadmin server role,  and no one  you can find is in the sysadmin role.   At this point you may think that your only options are to reinstall SQL Server and attach the databases, or to  directly access the master database files, which may potentially damage the data.

 

SQL Server 2005 provides a better disaster recovery option for this scenario that is non-intrusive for master DB and that will help you preserve any objects and data stored in master DB (such as logins, certificates, Service Master Key, etc.) intact. Members of the Windows Administrators group now have access to SQL Server when SQL Server is in started in single-user mode, also known as “maintenance mode “.

 

Using the single-user mode, SQL Server 2005 prevents a  Windows Administrator to abuse this privilege to act on behalf of the sysadmin without being noticed. This allows Windows Administrator accounts to perform certain maintenance tasks, such as installing patches.

 

In order to start SQL Server in single-user mode, you can add the parameter “-m” at the command line. You can also use the SQL Server Configuration Manager tool, which provides proper controls for the file access and other privileges. To use the Configuration Manager tool to recover your system, use the following steps:

 

1. Open the Configuration Manager tool from the "SQL Server 2005| Configuration" menu

2. Stop the SQL Server Instance you need to recover

3. Navigate to the “Advanced” tab, and in the Properties text box add “;–m” to the end of the list in the “Startup parameters” option

4. Click the “OK” button and restart the SQL Server Instance

 

NOTE: make sure there is no space between “;” and “-m”, the registry parameter parser is sensitive to such typos. You should see an entry in the SQL Server ERRORLOG file that says “SQL Server started in single-user mode.”

 

5. After the SQL Server Instance starts in single-user mode, the Windows Administrator account is able to connect to SQL Server using the sqlcmd utility using Windows authentication. You can use Transact-SQL commands such as "sp_addsrvrolemember" to add an existing login (or a newly created one) to the sysadmin server role.

The following example adds the account "Buck" in the "CONTOSO" domain to the SQL Server "sysadmin" role:

6. Once the sysadmin access has been recovered, remove the “;-m” from the startup parameters using the Configuration Manager and restart the SQL Server Instance

 

 

Important Security Notes:

This process should only be used for disaster recovery when no other method to access the system with a privileged (i.e. sysadmin or equivalent) is available.

 

This process allows a Windows Administrator account to override their privileges within SQL Server. It requires explicit and intrusive actions that can be monitored and detected, including:

·         Stop SQL Server and restart it in single use mode

·         Connecting to SQL Server using Windows credentials

anyhow im going to tell a little Detail to readers ....

This is About Using MS SQL SERVER 2005(Non Express Version) ..... with Rolebased Member ship .....

1. First we need to Setup the DATABASE in the MS SQL SERVER 2005 to use for the Role based member ship ....
Go to Start > Program Files > Visual Studio 2005 > Visual Studio Tools > Visual Studio Command Prompt...
There just type this Command
aspnet_regsql.exe
and press enter...
It will start a wizard ... in the wizard .. Give your MS SQL SERVER 2005 Instance Name... lets say ... ASIF\SQL2K5 (Where Asif is my Computer Machine name and then Slash and then SQL2K5 is the SQL Instance name i gave while i was installing MS SQL SERVER 2005 you can also sometime have it like (localhost) Hope it will work for you in your case... in simply this is the DATA SOURCE name what you use in your Connection String usually...) Then you can choose an Existing Database ... lets say ... DB_Existing ... which is already residing in my database Engine ... But i can also Give the New Name like ASPNET .. it will Upgrade the Previous (if exists) or Create a new DB with TABLES Neccessary to setup a complete Membership in ASP.Net to use ASP.Net Readymade conrols....
Then press Finish or OKAY whatever ....

If you will go to the Database you will see that there is a complete setup made by that Wizard you ran ....

2. We need to setup this Database for use by the *ASP.Net Website configuration Tool*.
Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Internet Information Service > Expand to the Default Website.. Right Click on the "WEBSITES" node (which is PARENT Node of the Default Website Node) .. > Properties > ASP.Net > Edit Configuration > Genral Tab > ConnectionString Manager ...
SO WE ARE AGAIN HERE .. here you will see that the connection string is WRONG(according to the MS SQL SERVER 2005 .. its setup for MSSQL Express Edition with a default database given named something like ASPNET DB whatever....you JUST NOW Change that thingy to you OWN connection String What Suites your MS SQL SERVER 2005 Instance .. )
My personal String is:
Data Source=Asif\SQL2K5;integrated security=SSPI;initial catalog=aspnet;
KOOOOOOOOOL !!!

3. One more thing ... Giving Access to ASPNET User to use MS SQL SERVER 2005 DBs
Sometimes you have setup your ASPNET System Account for using MS SQL SERVER 2005 Databases,, in that case it will NOT get Connected and Right on the Connection.Open(); it will Throw Exception .... In this case (i mean if you dont have permisions to Connect ASPNET application to Connect to MS SQL SERVER 2005 ...)
Run MS SQL SERVER 2005 Management Studio from
Start > All Programs > Microsoft SQL SERVER 2005 > SQL Server Management Studio
Connect to the Database Instance .... using your Windows Authentiaction simply
then Right Below the DatabasesNode press the *SECURITY* Node... there you will Right Click the Node: Logins > New Login (from Right Click Context Menu) > Press Search Button > Advanced > Find Now > Choose the ASPNET Account .. and Press OK > OK and Finally OK ....it will Give your ASPNET account to access the Databases while you will be using IIS Browsing ETC ETC ....

Vista 64 SP 1 Upgrade isn't working

Microsoft... Your stupid SP1 isn't working.. Lot of updates fail lately lately.

My Visual Studio 2008 SP1 failed, too.  I had to lot of jumping around to get it to installed.

their MSDN download area download things at 16kbps.  I chatted with a ladly but appears to be wasted of time.

I get the same result, ie. error 80070002 when trying to install Windows 

Vista Service Pack 1 (KB936330). My time-consuming investigation has led me 

in a dozen directions. I have seen (and unsuccessfully tried) these "fixes":

1. Downloading and installing the so-called "hot fix", then reinstalling SP1.

2. Per the Windows Help and Support: "deleting temporary update files" 

(which by the way also deletes yiour Windows Update History), by following 

the three step procedure (1) stop the Windows Update Service, by Click to 

open Administrative Tools, double-click "Services", right-click "Windows 

Update", then click "Stop"; (2) delete temporary update files by deleting all 

files in the folders: C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\DataStore\* and 

C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Download\*

(3) restart Windows Update Service, by Click to open Administrative Tools, 

double-click "Services", right-click "Windows Update", then click "Restart"

3. Checking on Google for "80070002": I see many, many other people have had 

this problem, but most just list what they tried (as I am doing) without 

success (ditto). Some links mentioned a "registry problem" and I had 

recently downloaded and run some Registry Cleaners, eg. Wise Registry, AML 

Free Registry Cleaner, Eusing Free Registry Cleaner, so this seemed like a 

possibility.

4. One link explicitly claimed it could "fix" the 80070002 problem by 

downloading and running a "free" program to fix the Registry. This turned 

out to be RegCure which when I downloaded and ran it did list a bunch of 

"registry problems", but then when you try to fix them it says you have to 

buy a license (for $30, I think) to actually fix the problems it found. 

This seemed like a real SCAM to me for what was claimed to be "free" 

software. (Not the first time I have encountered this, however, and I'm sure 

not the last.)

5. I tried going directly to the Microsoft Updates site, but they claimed 

using the “Start...Windows Update” under Vista provided a very much smaller 

downloadable install program than the "standalone" versions available from 

the Website, at least for "x86" and "x64". Which then started me off on a 

Google quest to find out what the hell "x86" and "x64" were. This led to a 

quite interesting lesson in computer architecture and the history of hardware 

development, BUT no closer to a fix for 80070002.

6. Trying again, I actually got the SP1 downloaded, but I had a problem with 

the subsequent "install" which I tried at least 3 or 4 times.

7. The last time I got a "Welcome to Windows Vista Service Pack 1" window 

but when I clicked "What you should know before installing Service Pack 1", 

it tried to run a “spclite.exe” program which my Trend Micro Internet 

Security Anti-virus SW "trapped". When I Googled "spclite" I got some pretty 

scary warnings, eg. See for example:

It seems to imply that spclite.exe might be a virus, spy ware, or malware. 

But again, they want money to sell you a service to tell you for sure.

1. Start the DCPROMO wizard--go to Start, Run, then type

   DCPROMO

2. At the introduction screen, click Next.
3. When you see the warning that Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0 SP3 and earlier versions won't be able to log on to Windows 2003 domain controllers (DCs), click Next.
4. When the wizard asks you whether this domain is a new domain or an additional DC for an existing domain, select "Domain controller for a new domain," then click Next.

5. Select the appropriate forest option (i.e., domain in a new forest, a child domain of an existing domain tree, a new domain tree in an existing forest), then click Next. This is one of those simple tip posts that may seem obvious and taken for granted by those of us who have been working with SQL Server for a while now but maybe a newbie or two out there will find this helpful.

Every so often (just this morning!) I find myself resetting an identity column value back to 0 after I've deleted all the existing records so the table gets a fresh start at primary key 1. Yes, I know all about primary keys not changing and how the value in the primary key doesn't matter and so on. Sometimes I just like the primary keys starting at 1.

The following line resets the Identity value for the Customer table to 0 so that the next record added starts at 1.

DBCC CHECKIDENT('Customer', RESEED, 0)

I had an error "Cannot insert explicit value for identity column."

I had my primary column set to be an identity column. I didn't know how to trace my error because everything was correct. But, sometimes when table definition changed and may have created diagram before the column was designated to be the identity column an error occurs. In this case, you delete the table and readd the table on to your dbml/diagram [Linq to SQL Classes].

Linq Distinct

Lets' say I have two tables. Here, you have SectionTable and SectionName.

SectionTable TableID SectionID 1 1 2 1 3 2

SectionName TableID SectionName 1 Blue 2 Red 3 Pink

On SectionTable you have duplicate value of of SectionID.
On SectionName, you have no duplicate values.

"from st in db.SectionTable select st" you will get the Grid Data of SectionTable
"from sn in db.SectionName select sn" you will get the Grid Data of SectionName.

How do you marry these two tables to get a Distinctive Values?

If you wrap ().Distinct() around your query, you get Distict value of the both!

inserting texbox inside of the gridview

This took me awhile.. Here is my solution.

Here is an idea...
1. Create gridview
2. Create blank templatefield
3. Bind gridview
4. Grab hold of the holder like page, from, placeholder that has the gridview
5. Find "GridView" control(s).
6. Grab hold of rows
7. Insert by row.cells[i].controls.add(your control);

For some reason i couldn't add itemtemplate or edittemplate like how I could add boundfield inside of the gridview.
instead, I created an empty TemplateField

The code below is O = n^2... there might be better algorithms to do this. Maybe add textbox during mygrid creation. that way, there is no loop... but this is decent. Eefficiency gain by 0=1 versus n^2 is very small in this case. Corn Chowders!

FirstName and LastName

From above Query

Query.FirstName and Query.LastName are returned.

Let's say FirstName is an empty field but not Null.
LastName is Null;

FirstName is equal to both Null and string.empty.
LastName is equal to string.empty.

thus either null or string.empty can be == to string.empty

so... you can do

Blackberry 9000

I am a huge blackberry fan. I have Verizon Wireless version of 8830. Blackberry is so useful and it works like an appliance. There are some flaws but its goodness significantly outweighs the flaws.

I am currently developing WAP/.NET/Blackberry compatible applications. It should be cool.

There is a report that Blackberry Bold 9000 is about to come out to Verizon Wireless.

This is the spec is available here [link]
What's interesting about this link is that it is available only 3 months after the availability with AT&T. It also comes with WIFI (a/b/g) and possibly working GPS function that has been previously disabled by Verizon Wireless for various reasons. Many people were unhappy about it. It also comes with 128MB RAM instead of 64MB that's on my 8830.

I am so getting this device when it comes out. It's very exciting development.

On the Security tab, examine the list of users. If the Network Service account is not listed, add it. 5. Gridview Select Problem with ItemTemplate

Problem: I have a gridview where instead of using the asp:boundfield, I have used TemplateField with custom ItemTemplateField to populate the data by

Problem with this was that I wasn't able to get the cells[0].Text with the ItemTemplate.
So, here is my solution

This how you get the value of the this particular value.

This isn't very strong solution but it is. I wasn't able to find a more elegance solution at this time. The better solution may exist.

Visual Studio Remote Debugging Monitor

Debugging is a great way to step through your code to see how the codes (classes and its properties) are like during the execution. I wasn't able to make Visual Studio's Script Debugger Working. But, I have it working now. Thanks to Steven Harman.

I had "unable to connect to the Microsoft Visual Studio Remote Debugging Monitor named 'Administrator@VM-W2003STD'. The Microsoft Visual Studio Remote Debugging Monitor on the remote computer cannot connect to the local computer. Please see Help for assistance."

I have vmware v6 on my Windows XP SP2 that has Windows 2003 Standard for IIS and SQL Server Standard. Reason I do this is because I like to separate my development from my local computer and also, it allows development related services not to be loaded.

These are the things that I did...
1. I created user login that's same as my local machine on the server
So, my userid and passwords are the same.
2. on Visual Studio Remote Debugging Monitor (VSRDM) on a server side, I set the appropriate security level for this userid
3. on VSRMD on server side, Tools -> Options. for the Server name, I had userid@______.
4. I reloaded the Visual Studio. It now works.

Zune 2.3 Installation Error

Some of you will get an error saying that it needs Zune-x86.msi or something to that nature. It will give you a dialog box asking for [drive]:/hexadirectory/packages

- get windows uninstaller from Microsoft site
- uninstall zune including the language pack
- uninstall all .net framework
- reinstall them from 2.0
- then install 2.0 beta 1
- then install 3.0 ( I didn't install this )
- then install 3.5

my Zune software now works including the wireless sync, which is really neat!
